Taylor Swift's 'Love Story': A Commentary

We were both young when I first saw you

I close my eyes and the flashback starts

I’m standing there on a balcony in summer air

So far so good. Romantic, even. Where were you anyway, for there to be a balcony?

See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns

Whoa whoa, ball gowns? Is this prom? Are you in *highschool*?

I see you make your way through the crowd

And say hello. Little did I know

And that guy has a lot of nerve (possibly an inflated ego) if he can just walk up to you and say “hey girl.” But ok, confident guys are good.

That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles

Oh yeah, great people to have as your role models, Romeo and Juliet, because *that* really turned out well. And why was he throwing pebbles? Why didn't he, you know, like, ring the doorbell? Why did he feel the need for secrecy? Was it 11pm on a school night? Or was he just trying to be cute, in which case all the other girls are now jealous?

And my daddy said “Stay away from Juliet”

Why did your “daddy” dislike him so much? Does the guy look like your exes? Or was your dad just being a jerk like that?

And I was crying on the staircase

Begging you please don't go, and I said

Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone

I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run

You make a request, and then immediately say “I'll be waiting.” That kinda makes you seem…bossy…jus sayin… And run? Run where? When? For how long? You just met the guy, and you already think—oh, excuse, me, *know*—you can both make it in a permanent relationship, even if it means leaving everything? Oh, wait, I forgot, you’re taking after Romeo and Juliet. Let me know how that works out for ya.

You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess

It's a love story, baby just say yes

“Baby just say yes,” huh? I love how you're just dictating what's going to happen. You're the one who's making the plans, making the decisions, and basically proposing. Your guy is a wimp for not only letting you walk all over him, but also for letting you think this “love story,” this fairytale, is going to work out just like the books. Especially since the one you want to copy is Romeo and Juliet. I wonder how he feels about that.

So I sneak out to the garden to see you

We keep quiet, 'cause we’re dead if they knew

Pretty much.

So close your eyes; escape this town for a little while

'Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter

Now you’re emulating Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter? Have you even read that book? Do you not realize she's not really the woman you want as your heroine—gets pregnant by a hypocritical minister and is abandoned by him, even though they still live in the same town so he can definitely see how badly everyone is treating her, because he has no spine?

And my daddy said “Stay away from Juliet”

But you were everything to me

Well that escalated quickly.

I was begging you please don't go, and I said

Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone

I'll be waiting all there’s left to do is run

You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess

It's a love story, baby just say yes

He doesn't seem very eager if you have to tell him again…

Romeo save me, they try to tell me how to feel

Oh please. They’re trying to make sure you, a highschooler, don't make a completely stupid decision. Oh wait…

This love is difficult, but it's real

Why is it difficult? Because of your family, or because trying to get an answer out of him is getting old, or because you really don't know if he loves you at all? It might help if you actually gave him a chance to answer. And how do you know it's real? How much experience can you have gotten in highschool?

Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess

*You’re* the one trying to reassure *him*? Isn't he supposed to be the strong one? Are you sure he even wants this?

It's a love story, baby just say yes

Oh oh

Yes, that's right, whine. That only works on push-overs, but I guess since that's what he is, you're good.

I got tired of waiting

Wondering if you were ever coming around

You must really love him if you got sick of waiting for him.

My faith in you was fading

Wow, the amount of trust in this relationship is really enviable.

When I met you on the outskirts of town, and I said

What were you doing there? You got sick of waiting at home or wherever so you went for a walk? How is that supposed to help him find you?

Romeo save me, I've been feeling so alone

I keep waiting for you but you never come

You're whining again. And why doesn't he come? Has he been avoiding you? Has he been with someone else? Does he give you reasons for his absences? Huh? Huh? Does he?

Is this in my head? I don't know what to think

Again, the vibes of trust I'm getting are overwhelming.

He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said

Well that was...extremely sudden...

Marry me, Juliet, you'll never have to be alone

Wow, he's finally talking. First time since he said hi and you jumped all over him. This guy doesn't do preambles, does he? He does his proposal like he did his first meeting with you.

I love you and that's all I really know

…That's all he knows…I don't know, this might be just a personal thing, but I like guys who know stuff. I find it helps.

I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress

I'm confused. I thought your dad hated him. One minute he's saying “Get out, never go near my daughter again” and the next minute he's saying “Oh, weddings, I love weddings! Drinks all ‘round!” What on earth did this guy say to your dad to change his mind?

It's a love story, baby just say yes

Not very creative, this one. Unless he just couldn't get your words out of his head enough to paraphrase them since you beat them into his brain Every. Chance. You. Got.

Oh, oh, oh, oh

Yes, yes, some “oh ohs” are appropriate at a proposal. Especially if it happened right after you were doubting that you loved him and didn't think he was worth waiting for.

‘Cause we were both young when I first saw you

What does that even have to do with…oh, whatever.

Wait…unless you're using that as an excuse for…oh…
